Subject Line: Protect my family from bromate in bread
Body: Dear Senator/Representative,
As your constituent, I urge you to protect our food from toxic chemicals by supporting the Food Chemical Reassessment Act of 2021.
Right now, the FDA does not systematically review its past approvals of food packaging and processing chemicals based on the current evidence. As a result, chemicals we now know are carcinogens that were approved decades ago remain in use and appear on our grocery store shelves despite the law clearly prohibiting their use.
Potassium bromate, an additive to many breads, is a good example. It has been banned by the EU and Canada for its links to cancer but shows up on breakfast tables across the country every day. The FDA must urgently reassess the safety of such chemicals in our food.
By passing this bill, you will require the FDA to fulfill its duties to protect our food supply and help ensure our food is safe to eat. Please put the safety of American families first and pass this much-needed piece of legislation.
By taking action, you’ll also receive Environmental Working Group, Environmental Defense Fund, Consumer Reports, Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Healthy Babies Bright Futures, Earth Justice and Defend Our Health email updates, tips, action alerts and promotions to support our work. You can opt-out at any time.
